A New York man who was arrested by federal prosecutors has been charged with two counts of conspiring to smuggle Viagra-like drugs into the United States.
The alleged co-conspirators, Thomas H. O'Brien and David J. Tilden, each pleaded guilty on Wednesday to conspiracy to traffic in drugs, one count of distribution of drugs, and trafficking in counterfeit drugs.
They were arrested at the Manhattan address of Manhattan Heights on February 14, and were held on $1.3 million bond and a special needs probation charge.
Tilden, a New York City native, is scheduled to appear in federal court on February 15 in Brooklyn to testify about his alleged involvement in a criminal conspiracy.
Tilden allegedly made his initial sales in Brooklyn to American pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly, but when the company failed to produce Viagra after a failed attempt to get Viagra for its patented drug, Eli Lilly allegedly sent the drug to New York's New Haven neighborhood. Tilden allegedly paid $100 million to New Haven for a supply of the drug and $10 million in cash.
The charges are related, and Tilden pleaded guilty to conspiring to smuggle drugs into the United States.
The defendants allegedly made two shipments of Viagra-like tablets to New Haven residents, in addition to distributing counterfeit Viagra tablets. According to prosecutors, Tilden allegedly received the pills from one Eli Lilly representative, Eli Lilly, while Tilden allegedly received Viagra from the other. The investigators then received samples of the pills and later sent them to New Haven residents.
The defendants were held at the Manhattan Heights address for two days before being booked into custody on April 1.
Tilden's attorney, Brian A. Booner, said Tilden faces a "fentanyl sentence" and was released from prison on April 17.
