Men in the UK will be able to buy Viagra over the counter after consulting with a pharmacist and without a prescription for the first time today.
ViagraConnect manufacturer, Pfizer, estimates more than a fifth of men aged over 18 in Britain suffer from erectile dysfunction, but almost half of those over 40 have not sought medical help.
The erectile dysfunction drug will be available in 14,000 stores across Britain and via pharmacy websites.
The tablets will be available exclusively from Boots until 10 April.
Those aged 18 and over will be able to buy the tablets following a conversation with a pharmacist or after filling out an online form. Men can ask to speak to a pharmacist in a private consultation room if preferred.
The pharmacists will determine whether treatment is appropriate for the patient and give advice on erectile dysfunction, usage of the medicine and potential side effects. They will advise men to consult with their doctor no less than six months after buying Viagra so that any potential underlying conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, or heart disease can be investigated.
A Boots spokesperson said that the man affected by erectile dysfunction should buy the drug themselves wherever practically possible.
Men with severe heart problems, those at high risk of heart problems, liver failure, kidney failure, strokes or those taking certain other medicines, will still need to be prescribed the drug under the supervision of a doctor.
A four-pack of the tablets will cost £19.99 and an eight-pack £34.99.
Men who buy it will be advised that they can take a 50 mg tablet an hour before having sex, but should not use more than one pill a day.
Viagra is is already available as an NHS prescription free of charge for those eligible not to pay for their prescriptions.
The pharmacist will decide how many packs will be supplied in a transaction.
The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) announced in November it was to steer men away from buying the tablets from. In 2016 £17m worth of unlicensed and counterfeit Viagra was seized.
Kristie Sourial, Pfizer’s medical manager, said: “It’s important to remember that erectile dysfunction is a medical condition, and that the impact often goes beyond the physical symptoms – it can lead to men feeling anxious, depressed and lacking in confidence.
“Our hope is that the availability of Viagra Connect in pharmacies will encourage men who do nothing about their erectile dysfunction to seek help, and encourage those who are inclined to seek help to do so sooner.”

In the early 1990s, it was the drug that revolutionised the treatment of erectile dysfunction, as its introduction was the only approved, and yet-to-be-available option for those who could not or did not want to take Viagra.
For over a decade, a number of older medications, such as,,, and, had been the most widely used treatments for erectile dysfunction in men.
But a growing body of evidence suggested that older medications may not be safe or effective in men with erectile dysfunction, and that some patients may even be taking them for a condition they may not have thought they could benefit from.
It was the discovery of Viagra that revolutionised the treatment of erectile dysfunction. A review of the drug's effects in humans, published in 2003, identified that sildenafil, the active ingredient in Viagra, had no effect on sexual desire in men.
But a study in mice indicated that sildenafil, the active ingredient in Viagra, may have beneficial effects in male impotent men, even in the absence of erectile dysfunction.
The researchers of the British Medical Journal (BMJ) analysed the effects of sildenafil, Viagra's active ingredient, on the behaviour and response of male mice.
Results showed that sildenafil treatment did not affect behaviour in mice, and did not cause significant alterations to their sexual behavior.
The new studies, published in the journal, indicated that sildenafil may not be the best treatment for erectile dysfunction, and the new studies could only provide new insights into the safety and efficacy of older medications.
The study found that sildenafil could be an effective treatment for erectile dysfunction in men with erectile dysfunction, but may not be as safe and effective as other treatments.
It also indicated that sildenafil may not be as effective as other treatments for impotence, such as (Viagra), and was not as effective as other treatments for other forms of erectile dysfunction.
Researchers concluded that the new studies should be considered with caution and that the new studies should be interpreted with caution, and that further clinical trials are required.
Sildenafil, which is available in generic versions, is a prescription-only medication and can only be obtained through a health professional.
It is not known whether the new studies are truly powered to find an effect, but that the results from the earlier studies are likely to be clinically meaningful.
Sildenafil, the active ingredient in Viagra, is the only new medication approved for the treatment of erectile dysfunction. Sildenafil works by increasing blood flow to the penis, which helps men achieve and maintain an erection.
In the study of impotence, the researchers found that sildenafil had no effect on the number of erections that occurred, and did not cause any significant alterations to the penis shape or performance.
Sildenafil has been shown to be safe and effective in clinical trials, with side effects such as headache, dizziness, and indigestion. However, some men may be taking sildenafil for a condition they do not want to take the medication for.
It is not known how long the new studies will take, but researchers are likely to have already started trials of sildenafil as a treatment for erectile dysfunction. The study is one of many that researchers are now trying to do.
The new studies will also take the form of a follow-up to the first study in 2017 to see how long the new studies will take to work.
